Keek er al een tijdje naar uit en afgelopen vrijdag was het zover. Open Podium in The Box, met optredens van Danny Ramirez, Downriver Dead Men Go en Sarah Phymm. In The Box was het met zo’n 40 a 50 bezoekers gezellig druk en ook het geluid stond supergoed en strak afgesteld. Niks stond een lekkere avond bandjes luisteren in de weg.
Singer/songwriter en lokaal cultfiguur Danny Ramirez opende het bal op zijn geheel eigen, typerende wijze. Getooid met zonnebril mompelde de levende legende zich door zijn repertoire van Murderballads heen. Denk aan een kruising tussen Johnny Cash en Elvis en dan met morbide meezingteksten. ‘I hope you die in freak accident’ dat werk. Heerlijke opener van de avond.

Daarna was het de beurt aan een van mijn favoriete (review 2009) lokale bands: Downriver Dead Men Go. Terug van 3 jaar weggeweest, met een nieuwe toetsenist in de persoon van Peter, ook wel bekend van Falling Leo. Melancholische luistermuziek met scherpe randjes op zeer indringende wijze gebracht. Je werd meegezogen in een geniale luistertrip. Een ontdekkingstocht. Diepzee. Het ene pareltje nog mooier dan de andere. Af en toe nog wat onwennig in de nieuwe bezetting, maar toetsenist Peter is nu al een aanwinst voor de band.
De set zat goed in elkaar. Na een zorgvuldige opbouw van dik een half uur ging DRDMG op het einde helemaal los met een oud Caitlin nummer (de voorloper van DRDMG). Gevoelige zang, scheurende gitaar, ronkende bas, scheve drums en zwevende toetsen. Wat een climax!
Kwaliteitsmuziek die moeiteloos in het rijtje Tindersticks, the Godmachine en Crystal Stilts (check dit!!) past.

Een andere favoriet (review 2008), de Katwijkse indieband Sarah Phymm, mocht de avond afsluiten. Sfeervolle, dynamische en gevarieerde alternatieve rock in de stijl van bands als Radiohead en The Smashing Pumpkins. Met zweef- vlieg- en space- invloeden ala Pink Floyd.
Een genot voor het oor en een waardige afsluiter van een topavond met lokale bands. Bands die niet bang zijn buiten de gebaande paden te treden met originele, eigen, muziek. Alledrie artiesten die veel vaker op de lokale podia te bewonderen zouden moeten zijn. The Box neemt hier duidelijk een voortrekkersrol in. Klasse! Vaker doen!
